Status as of 15 October 2026

NavX4 is an alpha. We say so here, not in the small print.

NavX4 is being built right now – in the open, free of charge, together with the people who drive it. You are not getting a finished product but a tool that grows every week. So you know what you are getting into, here is what works, what is being built and what is still missing.

Working today
  • Android app free on Google Play – which version is public, in review or in internal testing right now is in the version list
  • On Google Play since 13 October 2026: Android Auto, cockpit, round trips, group rides with friends, community tracks and the drive history with a map per drive
  • Off-road routing across Europe, four profiles, focus on Germany
  • Planning without an account: elevation, surface breakdown, via points, alternatives
  • GPX in and out, plus KML and GeoJSON
  • Live navigation, saving, sharing and recalculating routes
  • Points, levels and drive history in a free account
  • Offline packs for Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Czechia and Sweden – map and routing
In progress
  • Newer versions are in internal testing, among other things with the roadbook, clubs, community places, radio without network and a view of your own for each setting. When they reach Google Play is not fixed yet
  • Community tracks that become verified after several real drives
  • Routes we have driven and checked ourselves, as NavX4 Originals
Still missing
  • An iOS app
  • Offline packs for more countries
  • Round trips without a connection – offline the app only calculates routes from A to B
  • And the bugs nobody has found yet

What that means for you: some corners are still rough, and map data is not correct everywhere. If something looks wrong, that is not a nuisance – it is exactly what makes NavX4 better. Tell us through the form on the start page.

Our own routing engine · in service since 18 September 2026

The question is not whether a track is drivable. It is for whom.

Every route planner decides once, while reading the map, which ways exist at all. A forestry track drops out there – and no later setting brings it back. So we are building the routing ourselves, in a different order: the attributes stay on the way, and your request decides.

Your vehicle is part of the question

Road car, raised, four-wheel drive or a real off-road vehicle. Every way carries what it demands – surface, track grade, condition, ford. What your vehicle cannot handle is never suggested. What it can handle is available.

Permits you actually hold

Forestry and agricultural tracks are not closed to everyone. Whoever holds a permit unlocks them in the app and gets them in the route – whoever does not, never sees them. In Bavaria alone that is 48,355 ways that existed for nobody in the previous graph.

Yesterday's map, not last quarter's

OpenStreetMap publishes daily what has changed. The engine applies these daily files; since 24 September 2026 the map for all of Europe is regularly brought up to date this way overnight and only switched over after a check. A new barrier reaches your route with the next successful run. Status as of 15 October 2026: since 11 October the check has stopped every run, because two real map changes alter one of the comparison routes; until we have settled that, the engine works with the map of 6 October.

310,022 ways Rough tracks in Bavaria alone that the previous graph did not offer
11 % → 38 % Unpaved share of the same route, only vehicle and permit differ
0.7 seconds For 308 km across Bavaria – measured, without acceleration tricks
1.6 seconds Applying one daily OpenStreetMap change file

Honestly: since 18 September 2026 this engine calculates every route planned online – in the browser and in the app, across Europe. The figures above are measured on a real Bavarian data set, not estimated. Without a connection the app still uses a different engine, and that one knows neither vehicle class nor permits. The app has the switches for them since 13 October 2026 in the version on Google Play as well; the browser has them too.

The vision goes beyond the next track.

NavX4 is becoming a trusted platform for legal unpaved travel and overlanding navigation – with independent routing, curated routes and community knowledge. This list is a snapshot, not a conclusion: what comes after it is decided together with you.

Today

Europe routing, elevation and navigation

Off-road routing across Europe with a focus on Germany, four profiles, map and satellite layers, GPX, live navigation, saved and shared routes, points and drive history in your account.

Today

Offline packs by region

Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Czechia and Sweden are complete – map and routing each; Austria, Switzerland and Czechia since 23 September 2026. More regions follow step by step.

On Google Play

Android Auto

The same map as on the phone, next manoeuvre, remaining distance and arrival time on the car display, announcements through the car speakers; you can pick destination, route and profile in the car too. Since 13 October 2026 in the version on Google Play. So far we have only seen it in Google's test environment on a PC, not yet in a real car.

On Google Play

Round-trip generator

Spontaneous loops from a start point by time or distance, desired gravel share and compass direction – several variants to compare. In the app on Google Play since 13 October 2026, in the browser on navx4.app as well. Without a connection there are no round trips yet.

On Google Play

Friends & group rides

Invite friends and see where participants are during a shared tour – opt-in, visible only to the group and automatically ending with the ride. In the app on Google Play since 13 October 2026, in the browser on navx4.app as well.

On Google Play

Approach to a saved route

The way to the start of a saved route as a route of its own, preset to the Fastest profile – nobody wants forty kilometres of gravel before the actual tour begins. The saved route itself stays as it is. In the app on Google Play since 13 October 2026.

On Google Play

Plan in the browser, start on your phone

Send a saved route from your computer to your phone and start it in the app with one tap, instead of searching for it again – with the same account it appears right above the map, otherwise through a nine-digit code valid for 15 minutes. The app side is on Google Play since 13 October 2026.

On Google Play

Speed in view

Your current speed during navigation, next to it the legal speed limit from map data – only where it is actually mapped. Where nothing is mapped it says "unknown" instead of a guessed number, and on unpaved ways that is almost everywhere. It stays a hint either way: the sign on the road is what counts. In the app on Google Play since 13 October 2026.

Next

NavX4 Originals & Community Trails

Editorially approved tours and community tracks that become verified after several real-world drives.

In the app, untested

Vehicle data over a standard adapter

Engine speed, voltage and temperatures straight from the vehicle – read through an off-the-shelf OBD2 adapter following the ELM327 standard, available from around 17 euros (prices as of 09/2026). No proprietary hardware, no brand lock-in, no surcharge. The cockpit of the app has it since 13 October 2026 in the version on Google Play as well; we have not tested it on a real adapter or vehicle yet. Honestly: on motorcycles some manufacturers require an adapter cable, and dependable data starts with Euro 5.

Internal testing, untested

Controls without looking down

Handlebar remotes that announce themselves as a Bluetooth keyboard, with freely assignable buttons – from a self-built unit to a ready-made kit from around 49 euros (prices as of 09/2026). No list of approved devices, no unlock code. The usual buttons control the cockpit since 13 October 2026 in the version on Google Play as well, free assignment is in internal testing; we have not tested it on a real remote yet.

After that

The end of the list is not the end

What is not on this list yet is not ruled out – it simply has not been decided. The next entries come from the requests that reach us. Tell us what you are missing.

Requests and bugs – with your votes.

What you report shows up here once we have taken it on – requests and known bugs, with the number of votes. Voting works when signed in, in the app under Settings → Roadmap or on navx4.app/roadmap, one vote per account and entry.

Versions of the app and the web.

Which version went where, and when – public on Google Play, in the internal test or live on navx4.app. A version stands without a date when its release day is not on record.

Off-road is freedom. Your wallet does not decide.

Head out with the vehicle already in your driveway, on the phone already in your pocket. To get started you need no account, no subscription, no new device.

  • 01
Free on Google Play – or in the browser The Android app is on the Play Store. Planning a route and trying the navigation also works with nothing installed, on navx4.app – with no account.
  • 02
Runs from Android 8.0 The Android app asks for Android 8.0 or later. It runs on 64-bit devices and, since 13 October 2026, in the version on Google Play on 32-bit devices as well. Apart from a GPS receiver it needs no special sensor, no accessory at all.
  • 03
Offline instead of a data plan With a downloaded pack the app calculates routes out of reception range, spending no mobile data – what it does ask for is storage space on the device.

When hardware joins in: for vehicle data and handlebar buttons NavX4 uses standard parts anyone can buy on the open market, with no prescribed brand, at no extra cost. Both are built, but we have not tested them on real hardware yet; the roadmap above gives the status of each.

Honestly: we keep no list of tested devices. On very old phones the map can stutter, and the app speaks only where a text-to-speech voice is installed. Something running badly on your device? Tell us, with the device name plus your Android version.

“After more than 10,000 kilometres, I know this: the answer to legal off-road navigation is not another street planner wearing adventure graphics. It is NavX4.”

Amadeus Lederle, founder and test driver.
NavX4 grew from a real problem on real roads – for 4x4s, overlanders and adventure bikes.
